Digestion While Traveling: Ayurveda Tips to Reduce Jet Lag and Stay Balanced

April 8, 2026

I’ve been traveling recently—this time to France. Traveling always challenges me in two ways, but the biggest disruptor is digestion while traveling. Jet lag is part of it, but keeping my digestive health in balance is even harder. This week, I want to share practical Ayurveda travel tips that help.

When digestion is off, everything feels harder: energy dips, sleep becomes irregular, and even good experiences feel slightly uncomfortable. This is where Ayurveda offers simple, practical tools—especially when it comes to travel.

Travel Disrupts More Than Your Schedule

On my flight (about 10 hours), I chose not to eat. It was a nighttime flight, and I wasn’t hungry.

This alone is an important point: eating in alignment with hunger matters more than eating on schedule—especially when traveling. It’s one of the simplest Ayurveda travel tips, and one of the most effective for maintaining digestive health.

After nearly 15 hours of travel, I arrived in Paris around 4 pm. I’m staying with my daughter in her college apartment, so we spent the evening together. She and her roommate made dinner: seasoned beef patties with cheese and brioche, and a fresh green salad with fruit and vegetables. I also brought them Easter chocolates from See’s Candies, which became dessert.

Afterward, we walked along the canals on a warm April evening. I bought us beers, and we sat by the water with the locals—such a fun, vibrant scene.

It sounds like a lovely, even “healthy” evening. But for me, it was actually quite aggravating to my system.

Why Travel Affects Digestion (An Ayurvedic Perspective)

I tend toward a Vata imbalance, which is associated with movement, dryness, and irregularity. If you tend more toward Vata imbalace like me, you can read more about it here.

Travel naturally increases Vata. Add in:

  • Cold food and drinks
  • Raw vegetables
  • Irregular meals
  • Low hydration
  • Stimulation and novelty

And digestion can quickly weaken.

One of the more subtle effects of this is that your body stops signaling clearly. You may not feel hungry, thirsty, or tired when you actually are. Then, the system becomes overloaded.

The next day, my digestion reflected exactly that.

The Reset: Simple, Not Perfect

What brought things back into balance wasn’t anything extreme.

It was a return to basics:

  • Warm, cooked foods
  • Eating with appetite
  • Simpler food combinations

Within a day, my digestion normalized. My energy stabilized. Even jet lag felt minimal.

This is the power of working with your system instead of against it—something Ayurveda emphasizes again and again.

Why Food Combining Supports Digestive Health

In Ayurveda, digestion is considered the foundation of health.

When digestion is strong:

  • Nutrients are absorbed properly
  • Waste is eliminated efficiently
  • Energy is steady

When digestion is weak:

  • Food lingers too long
  • Fermentation and gas increase
  • Toxins (ama) begin to form

Food combining is a simple way to support digestion, especially during travel when the body is already under stress.

Practical Ayurveda Food Combining Guidelines

You don’t need to follow strict rules. Just keep it simple:

Easier to digest:

  • Protein + vegetables
  • Grains + vegetables
  • Fruit on its own
  • Simple meals with fewer ingredients
  • Warm breakfasts like oatmeal

More difficult combinations:

  • Meat + dairy
  • Too many heavy foods in one meal
  • Cold + raw + heavy all together

These small shifts can significantly improve digestive health and reduce common travel issues like bloating, constipation, and fatigue. I go into more depth on Ayurvedic food combining in this post.

Living It (Not Perfecting It)

I’m in France. I’m going to eat the baguette, the cheese, and the pastry.

But I’ve noticed something: when I balance those meals with simpler ones, I feel completely different.

For example:

  • Baguette with olives instead of cheese
  • Wine with lighter meals
  • Returning to warm, cooked foods the next day

This isn’t about restriction. It’s about awareness—and making choices that support your body, even while you’re enjoying yourself.

Personalized Ayurveda Support

Most people I work with have some level of digestive discomfort—they’ve just gotten used to it.

But it’s not something you have to live with.

In an Ayurveda consultation, we look at:

  • your constitution
  • your digestion patterns
  • your daily habits

And create a plan that supports your digestive health in a way that’s realistic and sustainable.

If you’re interested in personalized Ayurveda guidance, you can book a complimentary consultation here.

There’s something powerful about feeling steady in your body—even when everything around you is changing.

And once you feel that… you don’t want to go back.

It feels so good to feel good.
