One of my favorite parts of summer is that it naturally invites us to explore. Summer travel gives us the chance to visit family, head out on road trips, take long flights, sleep in unfamiliar beds, eat different foods, and step away from our normal routines.
Travel nourishes us in so many ways.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, however, all of that movement can increase Vata, disrupting digestion, sleep, and the nervous system. Ayurveda for summer travel offers simple ways to support your body during times of increased movement, helping you stay grounded, balanced, and connected to your natural rhythms.
At the end of every summer, I hear some version of the same thing from my students and clients:
“I had a wonderful time away, and I came home feeling happy and grateful– but also a little out of sorts.”
Travel is one of the fastest ways to increase Vata—the dosha made up of air and space. Vata governs movement, and while movement is essential to life, too much movement can leave us feeling scattered, anxious, constipated, exhausted, unable to sleep, or strangely “not ourselves.”
Even during the heat of summer, when Pitta is naturally more dominant, many people notice that after a vacation they don’t feel refreshed—they feel depleted.
The good news is that it doesn’t take much to support your nervous system while you’re away.
Here are two simple practices I return to every time I travel. They don’t cost a thing, and they can make a remarkable difference in how you feel.
1. Eat One Grounding Meal Every Day
When we’re traveling, meals often become unpredictable. We snack at airports, skip breakfast, indulge in vacation treats, or eat dinner much later than usual.
Rather than trying to eat perfectly, choose one meal each day that is warm, satisfying, and easy to digest.
Look for foods that are:
- Warm when possible
- Cooked rather than raw
- Moist instead of dry
- Simply prepared
Think oatmeal instead of a pastry, vegetable soup instead of chips, rice with vegetables, or a nourishing grain bowl.
If you’re somewhere hot, you don’t necessarily need steaming food. Room-temperature cooked foods are often easier on digestion than icy drinks and giant salads.
This one intentional meal can become an anchor for your digestive system, even if the rest of the day is less predictable.
2. Give Yourself Five Minutes of Stillness
Travel asks our senses to process an incredible amount of information—airports, traffic, unfamiliar places, conversations, different time zones, and constant decisions.
Your nervous system needs small pauses.
Each morning—or even before bed—sit quietly for five minutes.
You don’t need a complicated meditation practice.
Simply close your eyes, breathe naturally, and allow your attention to rest on your breath. If your mind wanders, gently return to your inhale and exhale.
If you already have a mantra practice, this is a wonderful time to use it.
If sitting quietly feels impossible, spend those five minutes free-writing in a journal instead. Emptying your thoughts onto paper can be incredibly calming for the nervous system.
Five quiet minutes won’t erase jet lag, but it helps signal to your body that you are safe, present, and supported wherever you are.
I’ve found these simple practices make a remarkable difference in how quickly I settle into a new place.
When it comes to Ayurveda for summer travel, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s awareness.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Ayurveda is that you have to follow every recommendation perfectly.
You don’t.
Ayurveda begins with noticing.
It’s asking, “What does my body need today?”
Sometimes that’s a warm breakfast. Sometimes it’s going to bed an hour earlier. Sometimes it’s taking a short walk instead of scrolling through your phone before sleep.
Small adjustments practiced consistently often create the biggest changes.
Wondering What Your Body Needs? Ayurveda Can Help.
One of the things I love most about Ayurveda is that there isn’t a single “healthy diet” or lifestyle that works for everyone. What leaves one person energized may leave another feeling sluggish. The same is true for sleep, exercise, and daily routines.
This is why Ayurveda begins with understanding your unique constitution, your current imbalances, and the small changes that will create the greatest impact for you.
If you’ve been struggling with digestion, low energy, poor sleep, or simply feel like your body has been asking for more support, I’d love to help. Although I work with clients online across the country, I also see clients locally here in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area.
