Tongue Scraping – the Ayurveda Practice of cleaning your tongue

October 18, 2023

Tongue Scraping – This is an Ayurveda practice that involves gently cleaning the tongue to remove Ama, which is the undigested food residue that accumulates on your tongue while you sleep.

According to Ayurveda, the tongue is connected to and mirrors the health of, many vital organs throughout the body, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, stomach, small intestine, and colon. When toxins accumulate in the internal environment without being properly digested and eliminated, they also manifest as a coating on the surface of the tongue.

It’s best to scrape your tongue upon awakening in the morning because you have not spoken, eaten, or taken in any liquids for several hours. Therefore, this Ama is at its thickest. Gently scraping your tongue will easily remove it with the tongue scraper and stimulate your digestion for the day.

This practice:

  • Reduces the toxins (Ama) and bacteria on the tongue that cause bad breath.
  • Enhances your ability to taste your food better.
  • Improves your digestion.
  • Gently stimulates your internal organs.

Last year, I made a YouTube video showing you what a tongue scraper is, how to use it, and its benefits. Here is the link to the video I made.

Tongue scrapers are also inexpensive; good ones cost less than $4. If you don’t mind using Amazon, I recommend this one that I recently ordered for a friend, which arrived in just one day.

Paavani Ayurveda, a small Northern California company, also makes a nice copper tongue scraper. They offer a discount to my students and clients. Use the code “Marisa10” for any purchase from them. Here is their tongue scraper.

In service to you,

Marisa
