The Ayurveda answer for sinusitis, brain fog, and poor eyesight

October 5, 2023

Today marks the start of “A Month of Ayurveda” with me! I’ll be writing about straightforward Ayurveda practices that you can easily do at home, without breaking the bank.

Let’s kick things off by focusing on the upper body, specifically the head and sinus area.

Do you, or someone you know, suffer from issues like allergic sinusitis, sinus headaches, brain fog, or weakened vision? If so, you’re in the right place because today, we’re delving into Nasya.

Nasya is an Ayurveda practice whose primary purpose is to cleanse the nasal passages and sinuses, making it a go-to remedy for ailments from the neck up. Furthermore, Nasya delivers prana directly to the brain, enhancing overall well-being.“‹ Learn more about Prana here“‹.

Nasya Oil

Nasya nourishes the sinuses, nose, throat, and head. Giving relief from congestion, sinus discomfort, and headaches. And while it lubricates the tissues in your nasal passage, it improves the voice and supports clear vision.

Nasya oil is a fantastic companion, especially while traveling. It can be used on planes or at airports to ensure a healthy journey. Traditionally, Nasya oil consists of a blend of sesame oil infused with organic herbs (such as gotu kola, and brahmi) and essential oils (such as eucalyptus, lemon, cardamom, and laurel leaf) designed to clear, uplift, and rejuvenate the nasal passages and sinuses. Suitable for all doshas, it revitalizes the respiratory system, soothes the nostrils, and supports proper breathing.

The nose serves as the gateway through which prana, the life force, enters our bodies. In Ayurveda, it’s deemed the portal to consciousness. Nasya oil purifies and shields the nasal passages while nourishing the tissues, ultimately promoting clear breathing and a peaceful mind.

Incorporating Nasya into your routine is simple:

You’ll need to purchase Nasya oil ($18), and I recommend one of these two options:

How to Use Nasya Oil:

  • Weekly (3-5 times): Lie down on your bed with your head gently tilted off the side. Apply 3-5 drops of oil to one side of your nose. Inhale deeply. Then repeat on the other side.

Relax in this position for a few minutes to prevent the oil from moving into your throat. If you sense oil in your throat upon sitting up, simply sip on some tea or hot water.

You may also feel like you need to blow your nose. This is normal!

Yoga and Ayurveda teach us that breath is one of the most powerful tools for transformation. Nasya will help you breathe deeply, and feel connected to yourself, and the world around you.

Enjoy your Ayurvedic journey!
