Sleep Better with this Calming Date Milkshake (Chilled) or Latte (Warm)

As the daylight fades, the moon rises and rules the nights, with its cooling and calming energy. This is the ideal time for us to shift gears from dynamism to restful sleep- the perfect balance between action and inaction. 

 

But the reality is that we often find ourselves stretching work or socializing past 9 pm., this strains our nervous system and disrupts the built-in rhythms of the body and mind designed to detoxify and recharge.

 

If you’ve ever felt restless, fatigued, or struggled to fall and stay asleep, consider trying this Ayurvedic classic: the Calming Date Milkshake. It’s an effective recipe to soothe your nervous system before bedtime, promote restful sleep, and ensure you wake up feeling refreshed. I also find it perfect for those late-night hunger pangs when a full meal isn’t an option.

Ingredients:

 

1 cup whole milk or almond milk

3 cardamom pods, gently crushed

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1-inch cinnamon stick

1-2 Medjool dates, pitted and chopped

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

 

*Note: If you’re particularly hungry, consider adding 10 soaked almonds to Step 2. You can also substitute almond milk for whole milk or dilute whole milk by half.

 

Instructions:

 

Step 1: In a small saucepan, combine the milk, cardamom, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and simmer,  uncovered, for 10 minutes. Take it off the heat, remove the cardamom and cinnamon, and let the milk cool down a little.

 

Step 2: Transfer the mixture to a blender, adding the dates and vanilla. Blend until smooth. Savor the milkshake warm or heat it up again and sip it hot.

 

Allow the tranquility of the night to envelop you with this delightful elixir. Let it become your nightly ritual, guiding you toward relaxation, rejuvenation, and peaceful slumber.
