Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic practice of warm oil self-massage, is one of the most nourishing and healing rituals you can bring into your daily or weekly self-care routine. It’s more than just massage—Abhyanga is an act of self-love that supports your body, mind, and spirit.
Rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda, this practice is traditionally used to balance the doshas, strengthen the nervous system, nourish the skin, and promote emotional well-being.
Whether you’re new to Ayurveda or deepening your practice, this guide will teach you how to do Abhyanga at home and why it’s so powerful.

Why Abhyanga Is Perfect for Spring (and really ALL of the seasons, but in this Blog, I am focusing on Spring!)
Spring is a season of renewal, growth, and movement. According to Ayurveda, it’s also the time when Kapha dosha (associated with earth and water) can become imbalanced—leading to stagnation, heaviness, or congestion.
Abhyanga helps counterbalance this by stimulating circulation, boosting lymphatic flow, and warming the tissues. It’s an excellent spring ritual to shake off winter stagnation and awaken your body.
In short: Spring + Self-Care = Sweetness in You.

What Is Abhyanga?
The word Abhyanga in Sanskrit means “to oil” or “to anoint.” This is a classic Ayurvedic self-care practice in which warm oil is lovingly massaged into the skin, from head to toe. It’s best done daily or several times per week, ideally before a warm bath or shower.
More than just skin-deep, Abhyanga nourishes your entire system—body, mind, and subtle energy.
This isn’t just a modern wellness trend—it’s a deeply respected part of Ayurvedic tradition, practiced for thousands of years to promote longevity, strength, and balance.

How to Do Abhyanga: A Simple Step-by-Step
1. Choose your oil.
Select a warm, nourishing oil based on your dosha or the season. Common choices include sesame oil (vata), coconut oil (pitta), or sunflower oil (kapha). Herbal oils like Mahanarayan or Ashwagandha Bala are excellent too.
2. Warm the oil.
Place a small amount of oil in a bowl and warm it gently. You can do this by placing the bowl in a larger container of hot water.
3. Set the space.
Create a cozy spot in your bathroom or bedroom. Lay down a towel or old sheet to catch any drips. Put on calming music if you like.
4. Apply oil from head to toe.
Start at your scalp and work your way down. Use long strokes on limbs and circular motions on joints. Give extra attention to your feet, chest, and belly.
5. Let it absorb.
Let the oil soak in for 10–20 minutes while you rest, meditate, or sip warm tea.
6. Shower or bathe.
Use warm water to rinse. Avoid using harsh soap on oiled areas—just let the warmth open your pores and absorb the benefits.
