Nourish Your Gut and Immunity with This DIY Ayurvedic Yogurt Drink!

August 22, 2024

I haven’t been feeling all that well lately, and it seems like everyone I talk to, from teenagers to octogenarians, doesn’t feel great either. Are we all not feeling well? Below I share a recipe to nourish your gut and strengthen your immune system with this DIY (do it yourself) Ayurveda Yogurt drink.

I just got back from doing nothing on a beach in Italy—sun, sand, good food, better wine, and not even much novel reading. I was just there, either on the beach under some shade or literally in the water. You can just stand or sit in the water there—there are no waves. It’s not like California.

I’ve been back long enough to be over jet lag, and I still don’t feel that great. I woke up on Monday with what I thought was food poisoning, but now I realize it might just be illness. Corona? Exhaustion? So, I decided to make some simple Kitcheree for easy digestion, which is also good for gut health and immunity. Check out that recipe in my blog post here. Then yesterday, I remembered the Ayurveda Yoghurt Drink: TAKRA. I made it twice, and again this morning, and I feel much better. And, as long as it’s not TMI, my bowel movement was normal. This is a sign of good health—or, for now, better health.

What is TAKRA?

TAKRA is a traditional Ayurvedic yogurt drink, highly regarded for its ability to balance digestion, support gut health, and boost immunity. It is often used as part of a home cleanse when fasting and you need some support. This drink is prepared with specific digestive herbs – typically recommended by your Ayurvedic Practitioner, though I have included in the recipe below herbs that work well for most folk. This is a gentle, good tasting and potent health  tonic! [Note: tonic in Ayurveda refers to herbs that restores function by strengthening the tissues.]

The Recipe:

Here’s how you can make this nourishing drink at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup whole milk yogurt or a non-dairy alternative
  • 1/2 cup water
  • A pinch of digestive herbs: cumin, coriander, fennel, salt, and cinnamon. Other spices are good too, so if you know what helps you digest easily, use them!

Instructions:

  1. Mix the yogurt and water thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Add the digestive herbs to the mixture.
  3. Stir well and let it sit until it reaches room temperature. This is the optimal way to consume TAKRA for the best health benefits.

Incorporate this drink into your weekly routine to naturally support your digestion and immune system. It’s especially beneficial when you’re feeling low on energy or need a quick health boost.
