Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine with roots in India, offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. One of its power- practices involves incorporating daily routines to promote balance and vitality within the body and mind. Whether you are looking to break free from addictions, such as drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes, or simply aiming to have more self-control over what you do and what you consume, Ayurveda provides tools to support you!
The Power of Jal Neti
One of my favorite daily routines (or almost daily as that counts too) is Jal Neti, it’s both cleansing and rejuvenating and is commonly known as using a Neti Pot.
This simple yet profound technique irrigates the nasal passages with warm salted water. While it may sound strange, the benefits are extensive and worth a try. And, btw, it is not so strange.
When you perform Jal Neti, you are not just cleansing your nasal passages but also removing allergens and irritants that can cause congestion and discomfort. This also helps to clear your mind and head energetically, leading to improved breathing and mental clarity.
Breathing in Higher Levels of Prana
In Ayurveda, prana refers to the vital life force or energy that we absorb through breath. By practicing Jal Neti, you facilitate the flow of prana into your body. This enhanced intake of prana can significantly alter your cravings and desires. For instance, the deep, unobstructed breaths you take post-Neti can diminish the urge to smoke or drink coffee. This is because your body begins to align more with its natural state of balance and well-being, making it less inclined to crave substances that disrupt this harmony.
Commitment to Practice
I have to say that while the practice of Jal Neti can be incredibly beneficial, it also requires a commitment to consistency. The body leads the way when given the right tools, and over time, with regular practice, you will find that your addictions naturally begin to dissipate.

Post-Neti Care: The Importance of Nasal Oils
After performing Jal Neti, it’s crucial to restore moisture to your nasal passages to soothe and protect the tissues. You can use any natural oil you have at home, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or the oil you use for Abhyanga (self-oil massage).Â
Alternatively, you might consider using a specialized Nasya Oil designed specifically for nasal care. One of my favorites is a this Nasya Oil Â
from a small, women-owned company in Northern California. They offer a 10% discount to my students, patients, followers with the code Marisa10. This oil nourishes and moisturizes the nasal passages and enhances the benefits of your Jal Neti practice.
